Geologically, Mount Sewu is the result of deposition and tectonic processes (collision between plates) that produce carbonate rocks with variations of landscape shape, various fossils, deformation structures, and hydrogeological uniqueness. The bedrocks exposed in this area are volcanic rock formations of Semilir and Nglanggran Formations of early Tertiary age. In the northern part of this bedrock is covered by napal type rock and Tufaan sandstone Formation Sambipitu and tuition sandstones and calculus of Oyo Formation.
Above Sambipitu Formation and Oyo Formation there are Wonosari Formation, and Kepek Formation. In Daearah Gunung Sewu the youngest rock is the alluvial Quartz sediment and volcanic sediment of Mount Merapi. The complex natural processes have left many geological sites in this area. The presence of various geological heritage sites will support the promotion of Mount Sewu as the world's Geopark area.

In accordance with regional administrative boundaries, National Geopark Gunung Sewu consists of the western part (segment Gunungkidul), the middle (segment Wonogiri) and the eastern (Pacitan segment). The National Geopark is the theme of balialam kars and bedrock revealed below, including the relationship between the natural components in it (geology, biology, culture). Geopark Gunung Sewu is used as an instrument of regional development in South Java in a sustainable manner. Its development concept is based on conservation aspect, education aspect, growth aspect of local economic value (one of them through tourism), and active involvement of local people.
Geopark Gunung Sewu has 30 geological sites (geosite) and 3 leading non-geological sites, spread over the western (Gunungkidul), middle (Wonogiri) and eastern (Pacitan) segments. These sites are a protected natural heritage. The unique and specific geological potential diversity that can be raised as a geological heritage in the Gunungsewu area can be found in several locations. Some of the geological heritage that until now has become a special interest attraction, especially science.
Is Geopark just about Geology? Of course not, though a Geopark must show an international geological heritage meaningful, but the goal of Geopark is to explore, develop and preserve the relationship between geological heritage with its natural, cultural and intangible heritage in the region.
Indonesia's opportunity to develop Geopark is very big because it has abundant geodiversity and spread all over the island so that, through the element of Cultural diversity the public gets a wide opportunity to participate in developing tourism in the form of creative tourism economic economic business (transportation, lodging, restaurant, souvenir, art, guide, porter, etc.) that can directly support the continuous development of Geopark.
